What is SR-22 or SR-22A Insurance?
You may never hear the term SR-22 or SR-22A until you tangle with the legal system.
  • That has led to a lot of confusion about SR-22 or SR-22A requirements and your insurance options. Drivers eager to get back on the road need to understand exactly what an SR-22 or SR-22A certificate is and how it affects their choices.
  • If you need an SR-22 or SR-22A, you are going to pay more for car insurance than you otherwise would. But not all companies penalize you equally, so compare auto insurance quotes to get the best possible price or check out non-owner car insurance if you don't own a car.
  • And you will not pay a penalty forever. Keep your record clean and stay insured and you could be paying standard rates again in just a few years.
What is an SR-22 or SR-22A?
  • An SR-22 or SR-22A certification is a form that is filed with the state, not a type of insurance.
  • An SR-22 or SR-22A certificate of financial responsibility verifies that the named individual is carrying at least the state-mandated amount of car insurance. The insurance company is guaranteeing to the state that you're maintaining coverage and are financially responsible for any accidents, and it will let the state know if you do not.
Why is an SR-22 or SR-22A required?
Many associate the need for an SR-22 or SR-22A with drivers who have a DUI on their record. If this is the case for you, read about DUI insurance. In reality, the SR-22 or SR-22A can be required for a variety of reasons, depending on where you live.
Common circumstances that result in an SR-22 or SR-22A requirement include the following:
  • DUI or DWI or other major alcohol violation conviction
  • Serious moving violation conviction, such as reckless or negligent driving
  • Several traffic offenses in a short time period
  • Driving without insurance conviction
  • Being involved in an accident while driving without insurance
  • Being caught by the state not carrying car insurance on your registered vehicle
  • A requirement for you to obtain a hardship or probationary license
  • A requirement to reinstate your driver's license after a suspension or revocation.
The most common car insurance exclusions
Car insurance exclusions are provisions written in the insurance contract. They exclude coverage for a particular driver or event. You should carefully check the Exclusions section in your policy.
The most common car insurance exclusions include:
  • Excluding a certain driver. The insurer may exclude a high-risk driver in the client's household. This will save the policyholder some money. Once excluded, that person should not drive the covered car. Otherwise, if the excluded driver causes an accident while uninsured, the policyholder may face several penalties, including fines, the chance of being dropped by the insurer and denial of all claims.
  • Damaging the car on purpose. Intentionally damaging the car is another typical exclusion. Companies will investigate the cause of the damage before resolving any claim. If the damage was caused on purpose, the claim will be rejected, and the policyholder can be even accused of fraud attempt.
  • Using a personal car for commercial purposes. Many insurance companies will not cover an accident if the vehicle was used to deliver goods or materials at the moment of the accident. For any commercial use, the policyholder must purchase commercial car insurance.
  • Custom equipment. In order to cover custom parts and equipment, the client must purchase an endorsement. Furthermore, some companies may not agree with customizing a car beyond certain limits and will drop coverage. Make sure to talk to one of our insurance representatives about covering your custom equipment.
Our agency is unique because it does not simply stick to one kind of insurance provider but brings the clients the best deals from many different insurance carriers. In this way, clients have access to offers from multiple carriers all in one place.

  • Meeting the SR-22 or SR-22A requirement can help you get your license and/or registration reinstated and thus get you back on the road. You'll know it's required when you're informed by the court or state. The notification should inform you why an SR-22 or SR-22A is required, the insurance requirements and how long the SR-22 or SR-22A form must stay on file with the state.
  • A form called the FR-44 is similar to the SR-22 or SR-22A but requires drivers to carry much higher liability limits. It is currently only required in Florida and Virginia for drivers who have been convicted of certain alcohol-related violations.
  • Car insurance companies can charge a one-time filing fee, generally it is $25, and that is all the SR-22 or SR-22A will cost you.
  • However, the violation that resulted in an SR-22 or SR-22A requirement will affect your auto insurance premium.  In short, it’s your infraction -- not the SR-22 or SR-22A -- that will hike up your rates. Your rate will jump by an average of 89 percent for an SR-22 or SR-22A filing with one DUI, or about $1,300 more, a year.
  • If the violation is serious, which most on the SR-22 or SR-22A list are, you can expect your car insurance rates to go up drastically. Rates for drivers like you can vary by thousands of dollars – but fortunately, our agency will compare car insurance quotes from companies that offer SR-22 or SR-22A filings.
